London awoke to a blanket of fog as temperatures plunged below freezing overnight.

The towers of Canary Wharf emerged from the mist as dawn broke on a sunny winter's day in the capital.

At ground level, fog shrouded roads and railways as Londoners started to return to work between Christmas and the New Year.

It came after temperatures plummuted to below -1C in Kew Gardens on Tuesday night and the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Weather warnings remained in place on Wednesday as dozens of flights from London City Airport were cancelled. Other London airports including Heathrow were also affected by delays.

The Met Office said the weather would remain "dry and bright" with highs of 6C, before temperatures fell to -3C overnight.

Further weather warnings for fog were issued for Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

A "cold and frosty start with overnight fog" was predicted for Thursday, before milder weather arrives on Friday.
