Heavy rain predicted this weekend in London

London is set to be drenched by torrential downpours this weekend as the remnants of a hurricane sweep Britain.

The Met Office said a month's rain could fall across Britain over the next 48 hours, sparking fears of strong winds, flood alerts and warnings of disruption to transport networks.

Forecasters said as much as eight inches of rain could fall.

The storm, which was downgraded after it lost its tropical characteristics, is set to swing in to Britain from the Atlantic Ocean.

Storms could continue to batter the country for as long as 10 days.

On Saturday, outbreaks of wet weather will start in the afternoon after a dry morning but the worst affected areas will be in Wales and north west England.

Flooding alerts have been put in place because of rising river levels.

On Sunday, temperatures are expected to be more mild but next week a series of Atlantic depressions are heading towards Britain so more rain and high winds are expected.

Abigail is the first weather system to be given a name as part of the Met Office's “name our storm” project.
