A London restaurant has been named the best Indian Restaurant in Britain beating competition from across the country.

The Painted Heron in Chelsea beat 9000 restaurants to come top of the list which will be published in the new Cobra Good Curry Guide.

The restaurant is famous for combining the best of Indian and British cuisine with dishes such as Partridge Vindaloo and Chicken Tikka Almond and Tomato Curry with Cornish Cream.

Head chef Yogesh Datta, who has also jointly won Best Chef, said: “It’s a real honour to receive these awards. Curry is a national passion and to be named the Best Indian Restaurant in Britain shows how passionate we are about producing the best Indian food, often with a classic British twist,”

The Painted Heron narrowly won over Cardiff Bay’s Moksh, whose head chef Steven Gomes shared the Best Chef award.

Pat Chapman, author of the guide, said “The Painted Heron deserves a Michelin Star - it’s about time that Britain’s favourite food is recognised at the highest level of cuisine.”

The Cobra Good Curry Guide is available now from bookshops and Amazon.co.uk.
