London hit with smog warning

6 March 2013

Londoners were warned of the threat of smog today as industrial pollution from the Continent mixes with car fumes in calm air hanging over the capital.

Levels of pollutants such as diesel particulates and nitrogen dioxide were rising rapidly this morning in locations such as the Old Kent Road and the Marylebone Road.

Yesterday the Government issued an air pollution alert and said people suffering from heart and lung conditions should cut down on strenuous activity.

Londond’s latest smog episode comes ahead of a Supreme Court case tomorrow when clean air campaigners attempt to force the Government to comply with European directives on pollution.

Earlier this week the Mayor’s office advised schools not to let “vulnerable” children out into their playgrounds when levels are high.

The smog is expected to clear tomorrow when rain sweeps in from the west.
