Hordes of passengers were left stranded on the tarmac at London City Airport following a fire alarm on Wednesday evening.

Flights in and out of the airport were suspended while fire crews investigated the cause of the alarm.

Pictures showed a large group of passengers stood on the runway while others waited on planes. Meanwhile, passengers arriving at the airport were forced to wait out the front.

Airport officials said the evacuation was deemed to have been sparked a “false alarm” following an investigation.

One person wrote on Twitter: “Stuck on the tarmac due to a fire alarm at London City Airport. No info provided whatsoever.”

Another passenger called Sam Newman wrote: “So I’m supposed to be on my way to Aarhus for a workshop, only London City Airport has a fire alert. Been evacuated from our gate and are now standing on the tarmac.”

Flight operations began to resume at around 7.30pm.

London City Airport tweeted: “Thank you for the patience of passengers following the fire alarm activation.

“The terminal has been temporarily evacuated. Following an investigation, this has been deemed a false alarm and normal operations will proceed as soon as possible.”
