Sir Kenneth Branagh today offered his support to the regeneration of London theatre “lost” for about 80 years.

The Bafta-winning actor and acclaimed director found the abandoned auditorium while rehearsing his Macbeth production at Alexandra Palace. The Palace is to bid for £16.8 million in Lottery cash and other funds to re-open parts of the Victorian Theatre, which originally had art galleries, a museum, library and banqueting hall. Sir Kenneth, above, said: “I was struck by discovering this well-kept secret — something lost that should certainly not be forgotten.

“I look forward to seeing the theatre come alive again through the work of the regeneration project.”

Between rehearsals he has given design advice to the restorers, who aims to bring the theatre back into active use by 2017.
