Swiss Cottage Tube station was evacuated at the height of rush hour after a fire alert.

Passengers were cleared from the platforms at the north London station shortly after 5pm after travellers reported a burning smell.

The evacuation sparked severe delays on the Jubilee line as trains were halted between Waterloo and Finchley Road while an investigation was carried out.

Transport for London said the station reopened just after 6pm.

Frustrated passengers told on Twitter how their journeys had been affected by the disruption.

Maria van der Plaat wrote: "Sitting for 40 mins on open doors train at the canning town, something happen at Swiss cottage, freezing here."

One man posted: "Been on the jubilee line for over an hour now because of some fire investigation at Swiss Cottage. The drivers repeated the same story since."

Charlie Jordan tweeted: "Great to see that a fire alert at Swiss Cottage = NO trains AT ALL on the #Jubilee line. Nothing like a bit of contingency planning."

London Fire Brigade confirmed it sent crews to investigate a fire alert.

Earlier on Tuesday, Holborn Tube station was evacuated at around 2.30pm because of a fire alert but the stationed reopened half an hour later.
