A huge fire tore through a terraced building, causing it to partially collapse this morning.

Six fire engines were called to the blaze in Mitcham Road, Tooting, at 5.18am this morning.

More than 30 firefighters remain at the scene, with the building left completely gutted after the fire.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: “The fire on Mitcham Road in Tooting is under control. We're still damping down pockets of fire."

The rear of the building, which is being turned into flats, collapsed during the incident.

Nobody was in the building at the time.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Witnesses said they could see smoke travelling from a long distance.

8carl8 tweeted: Building that was almost finished on fire on Tooting High Street. Roads completely closed, having to walk to work.”

Tim Fradin said: “Unfortunately a strong smell of woodsmoke at the bottom of Church Lane Tooting this morning. Avoid.”

Mitcham Road was still closed with traffic on diversion at 4.30pm this afternoon.
