A young woman has told how a homeless man stepped in to help her after she was left stranded at Euston station.

Nicole Sedgebeer, 21, had travelled from Milton Keynes for a night out in London on Thursday but was stuck in the capital after missing the last train home.

Miss Sedgebeer said when she got to the station, it was locked and she was left terrified being alone in a city she did not know.

She then approached a man who was sleeping rough nearby to ask for help.

She told the Standard: “I went up to him first and said ‘I’m not from around here’ and asked if there was another way to get in to Euston.

“He said there wasn’t but said ‘I could show you where the café is’.

“I was a bit scared [being alone] and he said he didn’t want to leave his stuff, but he still went and took me there.”

Miss Sedgebeer, who works as a merchandiser, said the man, who gave his name as Mark, even offered to walk her back to the station when it reopened at about 5am.

After several hours sitting in a cafe, she began walking back to Euston alone as Mark did not return to the café.

But she was left overwhelmed as she turned the corner and saw Mark running down the street towards her to take her back to the station.

She added: “It was such a negative situation and it turned into something great. It was really nice to meet someone like that.”

Miss Sedgebeer said she wanted to share her story in a bid to “make people look twice when they see a homeless person”.

She continued: “This man who I probably would of avoided eye contact with if he asked for spare change, completely changed such a negative event into the most eye opening event in my life.

“Mark, you are one special man, I will never look down on a homeless person again.”
