Heygate Estate’s last resident is forcibly evicted by police

The last resident of a housing estate that is being demolished to make way for a £1.5 billion regeneration project has been evicted by police.

Adrian Glasspool refused to leave his home of 16 years on the Heygate estate — that housed 3,000 people — in the Elephant and Castle because he claimed Southwark council failed to offer a fair price for his three-bed maisonette. A similar home on the new development will cost £1million — the council offered him a quarter of this.

Mr Glasspool, 39, a teacher, defied an eviction order to leave on Monday and police and bailiffs forcibly removed him on Wednesday.

His stand came as the council was accused of breaking a pledge of having 35 per cent of new homes at affordable rents. Only 79 — or three per cent — of the 2,400 homes on the new development will be available at social rents.

In February, Mr Glasspool and the 35 Percent action group will take the council and developers Lend Lease to a tribunal over the cut to the social housing portion of the development.

A council spokeswoman said it would pay Mr Glasspool his home’s market value, plus 10 per cent compensation.
