A sculpture created by the artist who taught Anish Kapoor has been installed in Owen's Fields in Islington.

Edgerunner, which weighs over half a tonne, was created by British-Romanian artist Paul Neagu who taught Kapoor at Hornsey College of Art.

Neagu, who has also inspired other contemporary British sculptors including Antony Gormley and Tony Cragg, came to London in 1970 and lived and worked in Islington until his death in 2004.

Councillor Janet Burgess said: “I’m delighted to welcome this significant sculpture to Islington, where Paul Neagu lived and worked for so many years. Edgerunner is a major new addition to Islington’s long and rich artistic history, and will be enjoyed by residents and visitors for generations to come.”

The Sculpture will be formally unveiled on July 25 at a ceremony that will be attended by the Romanian Ambassador and the Mayor of Islington.

Anish Kapoor is famed for his large public art works and is behind the ArcelorMittal Orbit at the Olympic Park.

He is currently working on a monument to commemorate the British victims of the September 11 attacks which will be installed in New York's Hanover Square.
