Town hall chiefs have appealed to the Arts Council for help to bring a missing Banksy mural back to their borough.

The Slave Labour artwork, which shows a boy kneeling at a sewing machine with Union Jack bunting, appeared on a wall at the corner of Whymark Avenue and Wood Green High Road in May last year.

But it was removed from the borough of Haringey last weekend, and it has now emerged that it is going on sale in the US on Saturday.

It is expected to fetch up to $700,000 (£457,000) at Fine Art Auctions Miami. Haringey council has written to the Arts Council calling on it to intervene because of the local and national significance of the artwork.

Alan Strickland, cabinet member for culture, said: “The Banksy created a huge amount of excitement and residents are shocked and angry it has been removed for private sale.

“The community feels that this work was given to it free, and it should be kept in Haringey where it belongs, not sold for a fast buck.”
