They are more associated with Del Boy and Peckham market, but sales of sheepskin jackets are soaring after they took a starring role on the catwalk.

Department store Debenhams has reported a 140 per cent increase in sales since the jackets were featured during last month’s London Collections: Men - the male equivalent of London Fashion Week.

Debenhams spokeswoman Kavita Khanna said the popularity of the jackets, made famous by Only Fools and Horses’ Derek Trotter, had been helped by celebrities such as David Beckham who have also sported the “Del Boy” look.

“Sales of Del Boy’s trademark shearling style coat have shown a big increase thanks to the men’s fashion shows.

“For those with a taste for bling and East London style, the Del Boy look is not to be missed. There’s never been a better time to don the ‘wheeler-dealer’ look while guaranteeing you won’t look like a plonker,” she said.

Traditionally adopted by market traders, the coat has featured in shows by Burberry, JW Anderson, Topman Design and Hackett.

The latest Del Boy fashion statement encompasses elements of the key trends for autumn, the store said, with other fashion statements such as flat caps, camel blazers, tweed jackets and gold chains and bracelets being worn by celebrities and models including Beckham, David Gandy, and Harry Styles.
