Bizarre: The dumped garden furniture

Audacious fly-tippers bizarrely dumped a full set of wooden garden furniture on top of a central London bus stop.

Westminster City Council inspectors found the table and chairs neatly positioned atop the shelter in Bishop's Bridge Road during a rubbish sweep.

"Fly-tippers have literally reached new heights," said a spokesman.

Following the unusual discovery, Westminster City Hall stepped up fly tipping patrols with 75 inspectors now scouring central London for illegally dumped rubbish.

Cllr Richard Beddoe, Westminster's cabinet member for city management, threatened: "If we catch people in the act, we will have no hesitation in fining them.”

He added: “We removed the items as soon as we saw them. But it is amazing what people will leave on the streets for others to pick up.

“We have successfully launched a campaign to tackle this behaviour, as we cannot go around just picking up after everybody. We want people to take pride in their neighbourhoods and help us reduce the blight on our streets."

Public rubbish dumping can attract a fine of up to £2,500. The council is urging people to report fly-tipping through the web or call 020 7641 2000.

Earlier this year a severed animal leg that had been abandoned on top of a bus shelter in Clapham Junction stoked Wandsworth Council's ire as Transport for London took weeks to remove it.
