26 March 2014

The former wife of Boris Berezovsky can not accept he committed suicide, the inquest heard.

Galina Besharova said the former billionaire was looking forward to leaving shortly for a holiday in Israel.

In a statement read to the court she said: "I am very suspicious that my former husband did not kill himself..

"He planned to go to Israel on Monday (two days after death) and he seemed happy about this.

"I cannot believe he would commit suicide. He was not like this. However I'm aware that he had talked about suicide to my son (Artem) and (bodyguard) Avi Navama, he did suffer from depression and the loss opf the high profile court case in 2012."

Ms Besharova had married Berezovsky in 1991, seperated in 1994 and divorced in 2011.

But she said that "we became very close again in the last four months before his death and spoke every day on the phone."

The oligarch had a 21-year affair with former girlfriend Yelena Gorbunova who started proceedings for a financial claim against Berezovsky a few months before he died.

In a statement she said this was "a commercial dispute over assets and finances but we have a civil relationship for the benefit of the children."

In the days before he died they had meetings over the education of their daughter.

"When we met Boris gave me no indication he would také his life but he did say: 'It is a very difficult time for me.'"

Before his death Berezovsky consulted two psychiatrists, an osteopath, a private doctor and his own GP.

Priory consultant psychiatrist Dr Saeed Islam said Berezovsky had refused therapy and counselling.

"He said suicide was not an option because he was Russian Orthodox and very religious," said Dr Islam.

"He said his family was very important to him and he could not do that to them.  He said he had enemies in Russia trying to destroy him and make him homeless.

"I did not také that as being a threat to his life but to his wealth. He said he felt he would never be left alone by them in terms of financial pressure."

He added: "When the news broke (of his death) I was absolutely shocked. This was not foreseeable. He would have contacted me if it was pre-meditated."
