Firefighters tackled a blaze onboard a ship near to the Cutty Sark in Greenwich this afternoon.

About 20 firefighters battled the fire on a passenger ferry, near to the Cutty Sark Gardens on Greenwich Pier at 12.15pm.

A section of the boat’s engine room was damaged by the blaze before it was put out after almost an hour at around 1.10pm, London Fire Brigade said.

Three fire engines from Greenwich, East Greenwich and Lewisham fire stations, dealt with the incident, and the fire boat was also deployed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Cutty Sark was previously wrecked by a fire in May 2007, while conservation work was under way, and reopened to the public years later after an extensive restoration project.

The vessel was hit by a second fire in October 2014.
