A fire broke out at the top of a tower block in south London this afternoon which featured in the Batman film The Dark Knight Rises.

The blaze started at a disused BT Delta Point building on Wellesley Road in Croydon town centre just before 1pm.

10 people left the building before firefighters arrived, the London Fire Brigade said.

Twitter users posted pictures of thick black smoke coming from the building which was formerly used as offices for the telecommunications company.

Filmmakers on the Batman series used it as Gotham General Hospital for a scene featuring British actors Gary Oldman and Tom Hardy. It is due to be turned into 348 new apartments.

Six fire engines from Woodside, Croydon, Norbury and Mitcham fire stations were called to the scene and brought the blaze under control within an hour.

The brigade tweeted: "We are currently tackling a fire at Wellesley Road #Croydon. Six fire engines are attending."

In a second update, a spokesperson said: "The fire on Wellesley Road in #Croydon is at a disused office block. Part of the roof is alight. Further details when we have them."

In a final update, it said: "The fire at the disused office in #Croydon is now under control. 10 people left the building before the arrival of the Brigade."
