The family of a scooter rider who died under the wheels of a truck in south London today paid tribute to a “loving and kind” man who made everyone laugh.

Married carpenter Mauricio Da Silva, 27, pictured, was less than a mile from home when he collided with a truck on Streatham High Road in front of shoppers on his way home from work on Monday afternoon.

His cousin Duarte Caldeira, 30, said Mr da Silva, originally from Madeira, “was very loving, kind, funny and warm. He was so bubbly. . . he made everyone laugh and feel good. He was such a great character — we are all devastated”. He said Mr Da Silva’s wife Carla was too upset to speak.

The driver of the truck, operated by food waste recycling firm Bio Collectors, stopped at the scene and was not arrested. More than 700 people have signed a petition urging a 20mph limit and cycle safety measures on Streatham High Road.
