A woman struck by a lorry on a busy road in Euston has died in hospital, police said.

The pedestrian, in her 50s, was hit by a HGV on Hampstead Road, near the junction with Cardington Street, at around 11.50am on Friday.

She was rushed to a hospital in east London where she was pronounced dead. Police said they were trying to inform her family.

The lorry, which was travelling in the direction of Euston Road before the collision, stopped at the scene. The driver has not been arrested.

Hampstead Road was closed in both directions between Robert Street and Mornington Crescent while emergency services attended the incident.

The northbound section reopened at around 1pm but the southbound lanes remained closed throughout the afternoon.

The death has capped off a week of carnage on London’s roads with three cyclists killed.

Anita Szucs, 30, died after a suspected hit and run crash in Edmonton in the early hours on Monday.

Seven hours later architect Karla Roman, 32, was killed in a crash with a coach on a cycle superhighway in Whitechapel.

Ben Wales, 32, became the third cyclist fatality in just four days when he was crushed to death by a tipper truck near Silvertown West DLR station.

Thousands of cycle campaigners are expected to join a “die-in” outside the Treasury in Whitehall tomorrow to protest about the deaths.

A male pedestrian also died after being hit by a lorry on Commercial Road, Limehouse, during the Monday morning rush hour.

Leon Daniels, Transport for London’s managing director of surface transport, said: “Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who have tragically lost their lives on London’s roads this week.

“Any death or serious injury on our roads is one too many, and our priority is to eradicate them.”

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “I was saddened to learn of the tragic deaths on London’s roads this week. My thoughts are with their families and friends at this difficult time.”

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit based at Alperton are investigating Friday’s Hampstead Road crash.
