A singer with terminal breast cancer has fulfilled a long-held wish of recording a single at Abbey Road Studios and now hopes it will become Christmas No 1.

Mother-of-two Katherine Crowe, 37, recorded her version of Smile accompanied by the London Metropolitan Orchestra under music director Andy Brown. The idea took shape after Mrs Crowe’s friend and fellow musician, Christy De Haven, spoke to her partner and record producer, Dave Armstrong. She described the experience as “beyond her wildest dreams”.

Mrs Crowe said: “I am hoping it will go to Christmas No 1. I have started to believe in miracles, because in theory I shouldn’t be here.” Doctors told Mrs Crowe, of the Isle of Man, that she was living on “borrowed time” this month.

The original Smile sung by Nat King Cole with the lyrics “though your heart is aching” hit the charts in 1954.
