Doorkins miaows out after decade as Southwark Cathedral's moggy mascot

Ben Morgan28 October 2019

The moggy who went from street cat to mascot of Southwark Cathedral is retiring.

Doorkins Magnificat charmed the Queen, gained an international Twitter following and was honoured with her own stone statue after being adopted by vergers who found her foraging for food around Borough Market in 2008.

But Doorkins, thought to be about 14 is saying goodbye to the cathedral after her failing eyesight left her struggling to get around.

Cathedral staff wrote on her Twitter account: “It is with great sadness to say that I am now not living at Southwark Cathedral. I am going to be living with one of the cathedral staff where I will enjoy my semi-retirement. Please don’t worry about me, I will be ‘taking over’ a home with someone I have known for many years and love to bits.”

The cat, below, made the headlines in 2013 when the Queen spotted her sleeping on a visit to the cathedral — reportedly causing “a lot of amusement”.
