Fire chiefs are warning people to be vigilant when making cheese toasties after an aspiring chef tried to cook one in a toaster and sparked a blaze.

The fire, which broke out at an address in Croydon last week, damaged part of the resident's kitchen and left the snack completely charred.

Luckily a fire crew from nearby Norbury station was able to put out the flames within ten minutes.

Following the debacle, the London Fire Brigade issued a warning to anyone preparing cheese on toast, advising them to use a grill instead of a toaster.

Crew manager Nick Morley, who attended the fire in south London, said: "Toasters are not designed to be put on their side and used to grill cheese on toast.

"Not only does it generate heat onto the work surface as we saw at this incident but the dry left over crumbs from the bottom of the toaster can get onto the hot elements and ignite.

"I never thought I’d have to give this advice as it’s painfully obvious but if you want cheese on toast use a grill not a toaster."
