A pedestrian is critically ill in hospital tonight after being hit by a bus outside a department store in Kingston.

The victim, whose age and gender were not immediately available from police, was hit outside John Lewis in Wood Street just before 4pm today.

The pedestrian was taken by paramedics to a south London hospital in a "life-threatening condition", a spokesman for Scotland Yard said.

The bus driver stopped at the scene and has not been arrested.

Part of the road was closed for a few hours while police investigated.
