An elderly cyclist who was hit by a car while riding in Regent Street has died, police said.

Michael Mason, 70, died at the Royal London Hospital on Friday after spending more than two weeks fighting for his life after the crash.

Aged 69 at the time of the collision, Mr Mason was cycling along the busy central London road north of Oxford Circus when he was hit by a car near Little Portland Street.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene, where the driver of the car also stopped.

No arrests were made, and police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the crash to come forward.

Mr Mason is the second cyclist to die on London's roads this year.

Detective Sergeant Jeff Edwards said: "I am grateful to a number of people who stopped at the scene to assist the casualty that night.

"This stretch of road was fairly busy with commuters, and I would urge anyone who may have seen any of the parties in the moments leading up to the collision, or the collision itself, to contact police.

"I also wish to trace any person who may have moved or had any contact with the pedal cycle."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0208 941 9011, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
