Council axes 90 per cent of people from its housing waiting list

Nine out of 10 people have been axed from a council’s housing waiting list.

Hammersmith and Fulham council’s list fell from 10,000 names to just over 1,000 after the authority implemented a new system which only allowed those with a five-year connection to the borough to apply.

People will now only be permitted on to the list if they are eligible for social housing and if they have a combined salary of less than £40,200.

Writing on the ConservativeHome website, cabinet member for housing Andrew Johnson said: “Those 90 per cent of applicants who were removed never stood a realistic chance of ever getting a home, despite waiting for years; not because there is a shortage of homes, but the fact that they would never be eligible for them.”
