Commuters faced travel misery at London Bridge station tonight after trains were delayed due to "poor rail conditions".

Hundreds of people were left waiting at the transport interchange for more than 40 minutes during the evening rush hour after services were halted because of wet and windy weather.

But frustrated train users claimed they were left in the dark about why trains were cancelled this evening, with some being told it was due to a lack of train drivers.

Others suggested that Southeastern were over-exagerating the poor weather conditions given it has been one of the mildest Autumns on record.

The station has been blighted by scenes of travel chaos this year as it undergoes a £6.5billion upgrade, which is set to be completed by next year.

Ann-Marie Blake, a communications director who pays about £2000 annually to commute from East Croydon to Canary Wharf via London Bridge, said she waited almost 50 minutes for a train this evening.

She said: "It should not take over an hour to do this journey. It seems like more often than not, trains are delayed.

"There is no communication with customers. When I eventually got on the train, there was a lot of pushing and shoving."

Stuart Glover tweeted: "This just cannot get any more embarrassing for SE/Network Fail can it! It's a bit of wind."

Rob Hamlin said: "Apparently these new things called leaves screwed everything up for the first time ever."

Another tweeter said: "How? Just how? All the leaves have blown away and it's one of the mildest Autumns on record. Hardly adverse conditions."

A spokesman for Southeastern trains advised customers to use their tickets on London Underground or bus services.

He said: "There are currently delays of up to 40 minutes through #LondonBridge as trains are running at a reduced speed due to poor rail conditions."
