A man and his girlfriend who bought tickets to LBGTQ+ New Year’s Eve event in London asked for their money back after they felt uncomfortable seeing two men kissing.

In an email exchange posted on Twitter by Rob Holley, a DJ for Push the Button who were the promoters for the evening, the man, named only as Stuart, said he and his girlfriend left before midnight after feeling “uncomfortable.”

“The event was GBLT evening and this was not adverised in the website (sic),” Stuart wrote to Mr Holley.

In a second email he said: “I have been to the venue a number of times with my girlfriend and did not expect to made to feel uncomfortable (sic).

“The venue was turned into a gay evening, I am not homophobic but this was not advertised on the website.

“I would like a full refund as our NYE was ruined.

“We missed the countdown to new year and my girlfriend was very upset.

“I expect a full refund if (sic) the ticket price at the very least!”

Mr Holley responded saying the event had been promoted as LGBTQ+ with an inclusive policy that “respects people of all sexualities and genders, should they want to join the party.”

He added: “In our 8 years we’ve not once had anyone complain that they felt uncomfortable because of their sexuality,” before asking what it was specifically that made Stuart feel he had to leave.

Stuart replied: “I have no desire to see men kissing each other and neither did my partner.

“I would say 90% if (sic) the people attending the venue were guys! Again not something I was expecting.”

Mr Holley said that the ticket app showed Stuart and his girlfriend arrived at 9.10pm and then requested a refund at 12.10am because he “didn’t realise what kind of night it was.”

He continued: “If you’re going out in Zone 1 of the most fabulously diverse city on planet (sic), and the sight of two men kissing makes you and your girlfriend uncomfortable, I’d suggest looking to spend NYE 2019 (and every other weekend night) at home, n front of the telly."

He concluded by saying that instead of a refund he would be donating the price of the £50 ticket to Stonewall, a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights charity, because “clearly there’s more work for them to do.”
