Clapham South accident: Tube platform not overcrowded when woman fell under train

Accident: the Tube platform was not overcrowded when the woman fell

A Tube platform from which a woman fell and was dragged under a train this week was not overcrowded, a new CCTV picture has revealed.

The image of the platform at Clapham South station shows commuters calmly waiting to board trains before the accident during yesterday's morning rush hour.

The union claims it warned Transport for London (TfL) last week that Clapham South had become a "death trap" for Tube users.

Yesterday's accident saw the 28-year-old woman's dress and coat become caught in a Northern Line train's doors before she was dragged along the platform and under the train.

Her screams were heard by horrified commuters who alerted Tube staff, prompting them to activate the station's emergency alarm.

She was eventually freed by firefighters, who used specialist equipment to lift up the train carriage. She escaped with just a broken arm and black eye. Friends said she was still in shock today and was ignoring requests for interviews from journalists.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash claimed yesterday it was "disgraceful" that TfL was "ignoring overcrowding warnings."

He said transport bosses were "taking serious risks with life and limb" as they try to cut costs.

He added: "This critical situation cannot be allowed to continue until we have a fatality on our hands. Our members know where the death traps are and where the pressures are building up and we are demanding a top level safety summit to allow us to get our safety fears addressed and dealt with and that also means an immediate halt to the job cuts."

Nigel Holness, LU Operations Director, said: “We are investigating the incident to understand exactly what happened but we have already established that while the station was busy, the platform was not overcrowded."
