The family of a London student who died after being hit by a suspected drug driver today paid tribute to him.

UCL student Charlie Heywood, 19, was killed after being hit by a car in the early hours of Sunday morning in the West Midlands.

Passers-by and paramedics rushed to Birmingham Road in Sandwell to try and save the Arsenal fan at around 3.35am but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

In an emotional tribute to the teenager his family said: "Charlie was a quiet, endlessly kind young man and a much-loved son, brother and grandson.

"He had so much to live for and was looking forward to his second year studying for a degree in history at University College London."

Police said a 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs.

Sergeant Steve Newbury, from West Midlands Police, added: "My thoughts are with the family of this young man who sadly lost his life this morning.

"Specialist officers are supporting them today.

"If anyone witnessed the collision and hasn't yet spoken to us, I would ask them to please get in touch so that we take your account of what happened."

Officers have appealed for anyone with information to call on 101.
