Call for charges over riot police ‘racist abuse’

A man who claims a Met police officer called him a “n*****” today pressed for charges to be brought swiftly.

Mauro Demetrio used his mobile phone to record the abuse he says Pc Alex MacFarlane subjected him to after he was held near his home in Beckton on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs during last year’s riots.

The Crown Prosecution Service initially refused to press charges but launched a new probe after Mr Demetrio, 21, threatened to go to the High Court. His solicitor, Michael Oswald, said: “For it to be prolonged is not in the interest of anybody.”

Mr Demetrio claims he was abused by three officers. Pc MacFarlane, 52, has since been suspended, another officer has been put on restricted duty, while no action was taken against a third. The CPS said it would act “as soon as possible” to reconsider the evidence.
