Police cordoned off an area of Hyde Park this morning after the discovery of a body in the Italian Gardens.

The body of an unidentified man was found hanging near an ornamental pond after a member of the public called police at 7.05am.

Scotland Yard said it was treating the death as “unexplained” and there was no obvious sign of foul play.

The gardens at the end of the Serpentine near Bayswater Road are half a mile from Marble Arch where large numbers of Romanian immigrants have been sleeping rough in recent months.

As many as 60 rough sleepers have been reported in the area at any one time.

A Met spokesman said inquiries were under way to identify the man.

Officers from Westminster borough were investigating the death.
