Being a nudist doesn’t mean I’m a criminal, says professor

A naturist who is a professor ata London university accused his local police force of being “institutionally prejudiced” against nudists after he was arrested during a search for a naked cyclist who was flashing at schoolgirls.

David Dunstan, professor of experimental physics at Queen Mary University of London, said he was held because he was carrying flyers for a cycle ride for nudists and a nightclub called Starkers.

He said he was forced to take part in an identity parade, questioned “heavily” about his lifestyle and that legal naturist photographs were seized from his Guildford home. He was holidaying at a French nudist camp at the time of the alleged offences.

Surrey police investigated his complaint but did not uphold it. The Independent Police Complaints Commission rejected an appeal and the High Court yesterday dismissed his challenge to the IPCC decision, saying Surrey police had adequately responded.
