A major south London road is shut after a huge articulated lorry filled with waste paper tipped over, showering the carriageway with rubbish.

The lorry driver was taken to hospital with arm injuries after his 38-ton vehicle overturned in Purley Way, Croydon, just before 8am.

It happened about a mile from a waste processing plant in Beddington Lane. Purley Way was shut between Beddington Farm Road and Ampere Way while police and firefighters cleared up the mess.

Drivers are being advised to avoid the area.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called at 7.55am to Purley Way to reports of a lorry overturned. We sent an ambulance crew to the scene, treated a man for arm injuries and took him to Croydon University Hospital."
