Armed police have apparently swooped on a street in south London amid reports of a gunman.

A section of Mitcham Lane in Streatham was shut shortly before 4pm because of a “police incident”.

Scotland Yard said police had been called to reports of shots fired.

Workers in the street told the Standard police marksmen stormed the road after the sound of a gunshot.

Police presence: At least five police cars line Mitcham Lane after it was shut because of a police incident

One woman, who didn’t want to be named, said: “I was just in the manager’s office when we heard what sounded like a shot and then lots of shouting.

“We ran onto the roof and were told immediately to get back by police. There were about two cars and then suddenly another three turned up.

“We don’t really know what has happened but police said they think there is a gunman. All the shops are shut and the road has been taped off.”

Sommelier Pierre Mairesse, 30, was on his way from the shops when he saw a flood of police cars.

He told the Standard: “The street was full of cops, they were all armed and there were sniffer dogs as well. I didn’t see what happened but the police said a firearm was involved.

“I wasn’t surprised to be honest, this area hasn’t got the best of reputations."

Dramatic footage showed police breaking down a door next to a Sainsbury's supermarket in the road.

A Met Police spokeswoman said: "Officers are currently on scene.

"To date no victim has been found, and there are no arrests.

"Enquiries continue."
