A hamster found abandoned in freezing weather behind bins in a wealthy London square has been adopted by a 10-year-old girl who lives around the corner.

A commuter discovered Snowball shivering in her cage in St George's Square last week with a note saying: "Please take care of my friendly hamster. I cannot afford to look after her any more."

The Standard reported how the pet was taken to a Blue Cross animal hospital. Now Snowball, an albino Syrian hamster, is living with Anya Davies, who persuaded her parents by vowing: "I'll buy her a cage with my birthday money."

Anya already owns 18-month-old hamster Dolly, and thought Snowball might need a friend. The rescued rodent enjoys the run of a three-storey cage. Anya's mother Barbara, 37, said: "Snowball is completely happy. She's been eating loads, running up and down the stairs and using her wheel."

The Blue Cross reported a 28 per cent rise in abandoned pets last year and blamed the recession.
