Affordable flats to replace Soho police house in £54m scheme

16 January 2013

A former Metropolitan Police section house in Soho that provided accommodation for single officers is to be demolished to make way for a £54 million affordable housing development.

Trenchard House, which was built in Broadwick Street in the Thirties, has been empty since 1999 and Mayor Boris Johnson said: “After years of lying dormant, it is fantastic news that this site will be welcoming in the diggers and bringing new homes to the heart of historic Soho.”

Construction company Barratt and affordable housing partner the Dolphin Square Foundation took over the building from the Greater London Authority and will build a restaurant, shops and 78 homes, of which 65 will be “affordable”.

The development is part of a plan by Westminster council to create a pedestrian-friendly route from Piccadilly Circus to Oxford Circus. Other potential schemes include the redevelopment of the former Raymond Revuebar at Walker’s Court, off Brewer Street.
