14,000 'will be left isolated' as council cuts hit the disabled

10 April 2012

AT least 14,000 disabled people in London could be frozen out of their communities because of council cuts, a charity claimed today.

Inclusion London said one in five organisations run by and for disabled people in the capital are expected to close by the end of next year and others will reduce the services they provide.

In a report launched today, 40 of the 54 organisations surveyed said they had already undergone cuts in 2011/12; five of them had seen cuts of up to 50 per cent of their income. Thirty-one of those surveyed said they expect further cuts in the next financial year.

Tracey Lazard, CEO of Inclusion London, said at least 14,000 disabled people could be left without an organisation that helps them. She added: "We'll get to a point where we won't see disabled people outside their homes."

A spokesman for the Department for Communities and Local Government said councils had been provided with "a fair and progressive funding settlement".
