About one in 500 Londoners had Covid-19 last week, as the number of people in the country testing positive for the virus continued to decline, according to recent figures.

Some 0.2 per cent of the capital's population is thought to have had the virus in the week ending March 13, a slight reduction on the previous seven days. The London infection rate has been falling steadily since January when it reached 1.6 per cent.

The latest survey from the Office for National Statistics, revealed the percentage of people testing positive for Covid-19 is estimated to have decreased in four regions of England: London, eastern England, the South-west and the West Midlands.

There may be early signs of an increase in the East Midlands, the ONS added, but the trend is uncertain for the other areas.

The East Midlands had the highest proportion of people of any area in England likely to test positive for coronavirus in the week to March 13 - around one in 225 people. Yorkshire and the Humber had the next highest estimate - one in 255.

Overall, around one in 340 people in private households in England had Covid-19 in the week to March 13, down from around one in 270 the week before.

This news came as  Boris Johnson urged Britons to take up the offer of a coronavirus vaccine as he was due on Friday to receive his first dose of the AstraZeneca jab.

There has been some hesitancy to take the British-Swedish jab over cases of blood clotting among a small number of vaccinated individuals.
