A mother and daughter who both battled cancer today appealed for cash to help the hospital which “saved their lives”.

Teacher Helen Lewis, 49, and Ciara, 17, were diagnosed and treated at the Royal Marsden in Chelsea.

Helen, who had radiotherapy for breast cancer there, went into remission in April 2015. A year on, “sporty, musical and academic” Ciara was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia.

Mrs Lewis said: “We couldn’t believe that lightning had struck twice. It’s been a rollercoaster of a journey for all of us, but the Royal Marsden has been there every step of the way.”

Ciara had chemotherapy before receiving a stem cell transplant last year. Helen has signed up for the 14-mile Marsden March to raise money for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, with Ciara, who is recovering, joining for part of the way.

They have already raised more than £16,000 since Ciara’s diagnosis to help charities including the Teenage Cancer Trust.
