Breast cancer survivors bear their scars with pride

“My good side”: Jill, Heather and Ismena deliver their messages in new charity campaign
25 September 2013

These brave women are the faces of a powerful new campaign that aims to raise awareness of breast cancer.

Jill, Heather and Ismena, all of whom have faced or are living with the disease, are pictured alongside hopeful personal messages about body image.

Jill writes about her mastectomy: “Yes it’s a scar. But to me, it’s something more. It’s a sign that I faced breast cancer and got through it. That’s why I wear it with pride. And that’s why it’s my good side.”

The campaign, created for Breast Cancer Care by agency Arthur London, aims to show that it is possible to find confidence after breast cancer, and to highlight the support available.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month starts next week and a Breast Cancer Care poll, to be released tomorrow, will show the damaging impact of the disease on confidence and sexual relationships.

Actress Amanda Mealing, an ambassador for the charity who made a full recovery from breast cancer after a mastectomy, said the images were “wonderful”. Nearly 500,000 people in the UK have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
