50,000 more A&E patients with drink problems

The number of people ending up in hospital with alcohol-related health problems is still rising.

New figures published today reveal that A&E staff dealt with 1.2 million admissions nationally last year — an increase of more than 50,000.

In London, 156,017 people were admitted last year compared with 146,391 the year before.

Experts warn that cheap alcohol is still to blame for the trend with people developing liver problems and other drink-related health issues.

The figures from the North West Public Health Observatory at the Centre for Public Health, Liverpool John Moores University, also reveal that a North-South divide still exists.

The greatest rate of hospital admissions were in the North-East and North-West and the lowest on the south-east coast.
