The charity at the centre of the Evening Standard’s literacy campaign is changing its name to reflect the “magic” of learning to read.

Volunteer Reading Help, which trains mentors to go into schools and help children struggling with the basics, will from today be known as Beanstalk. The Standard’s Get London Reading campaign has raised £485,000 for the charity and has helped to recruit 400 reading mentors.

Chief executive Sue Porto said: “We want to get across the magic of what happens when you combine a child who is struggling with their reading with someone who has a passion for reading.” Beanstalk aims to support 7,600 children by the end of this academic year.
