Queen Mary University of London has suspended its Islamic society over allegations of bullying and misconduct.

The society, which has given a platform to Islamist speakers from controversial groups such as Hizb ut-Tahrir, will not be allowed to hold events pending an investigation.

Allegations are believed to include accusations of bullying and intimidation of a student union members.

The Mile End-based university said: “Queen Mary students’ union has suspended the Islamic society while it investigates claims it breached agreed protocols and procedures.”

The society announced the suspension on its Facebook page and said it was working with the students’ union “to gain better clarity” on the claims.

Criticising the “hysteria”, it said: “The Isoc is currently appealing this decision and can hopefully resolve any issues to allow the great work to continue.”
