One Direction: We’re up all night reading Michael Bublé

Pop stars One Direction list their favourite books for literacy campaign Read Every Day
5 September 2013

One Direction may be the biggest pop group in the world, but the teenagers revealed they still find time to read — and named Michael Bublé’s life story as one of their biggest inspirations.

The boys said the Canadian crooner’s autobiography is one of the most inspirational books they have ever read. The life of the 37-year-old, whose hits include Haven’t Met You Yet, appears on a list of their top five favourite books.

They were asked to name the books that have left an “indelible mark” on their lives, “shaping who we are and who we become” to mark the launch of a new literacy campaign.

The group released their list of favourite books ahead of the launch tomorrow of Read Every Day, a campaign by children’s book publisher Scholastic. David Beckham’s Soccer Skills also made the list.

Others were the true story of an inspirational American teacher and her pupils, The Freedom Writers Diary; Jonathan Livingston Seagull, a novella by Richard Bach; and A Little History Of The World, by Ernst Gombrich. Scholastic’s campaign aims to encourage children and parents to commit to reading every single day.

Peter Tymms, director at the School for Education at Durham University, said: “The evidence is clear that children from homes where there are established reading habits and books available are likely to have higher levels of literacy.”
