London primary schools are facing a “perfect storm” as the school place shortage reaches crisis point, the Evening Standard reveals today.

Some headteachers are considering building playgrounds on school roofs or opening classrooms in disused pubs and retail parks to cope with demand.

Local authorities have been hit by a triple-whammy of unprecedented demand for place, decreasing funding and a lack of new sites for school expansion.

London’s 33 boroughs face a shortage of more than 101,000 permanent primary school places by 2016-17.
