Budding sports news presenters hone their skills at Wembley

Budding female sports journalists were given a chance to hone their broadcasting skills at an event at Wembley Stadium.

One hundred schoolgirls visited the London landmark where they were given the chance to try their hand at presenting, using cameras, dealing with TV crews and reading from autocues.

The event took place off the back of a government initiative to improve gender diversity and equality in sport media.

Official data shows that last year only seven per cent of sports broadcasting in the UK was devoted to covering women’s sports.

The event was hosted by sports higher education institution UCFB and Sky Sports News.

Organiser Neil Silver, UCFB’s Head of Complementary Curriculum, Employability and Media, said: “There is a cry in the industry for women to be involved in sports media jobs and we’ve partnered with Sky Sports who lead the way in offering jobs to good women presenters and people behind the scenes.”

“More and more women are recognising that there are opportunities for them, if they turn on their television sets or the radio, they will hear and see women doing the jobs," Mr Silver said.

“I think that gives them the encouragement that they can do it if they see someone leading the way doing the job.”

Would-be journalists were also given the chance to interview 2014 rugby World Cup winner, Maggie Alphonsi MBE.

She told the Standard: “It’s so great and positive when we go into the workshop how many enthusiastic young women there are who really do want to be involved in a career in sports journalism.

“We’re trying to highlight to them that it is possible and people have done it and if you’re really keen, you can be really successful.”

Katie-Olivia Pridmore, 17, said: "It's like watching the ladies and men on Sky Sports News and having that as a role model to look up to and then we've actually done it which is quite cool.

Sky Sports News producer Laurie Tucker said: "It's a really exciting business and it's great fun. So the idea is to show the girls how fun it can be".
