3,000 London apprenticeships up for grabs

More than 3,000 apprenticeships are available in London today according to figures released ahead of A-level results day.

The National Apprenticeship Service published the numbers and urged students to consider applying for an apprenticeship instead of university.

Jon Thorn, head of business development for the NAS, said: “In London we have doubled the number of apprenticeships year on year.

“The Evening Standard’s fantastic Ladder for London campaign that we have supported is really raising awareness to businesses and individuals and parents who wouldn’t have considered apprenticeships before.”

He added that young people are seeing the value of an apprenticeship because they can “earn while they learn.” The vacancies are available on apprenticeships.org.uk and the website is expected to have its busiest day tomorrow after A-level results are released. Mr Thorn said: “Recent research shows employers find apprentices 15 per cent more employable than those with other qualifications, including degrees. Apprentices learn the ability to apply the skill and the theoretical knowledge employers are looking for.”

Among the firms offering apprenticeships today is the Royal Bank of Scotland. Mr Thorn said that three years ago it is unlikely apprenticeships in financial services would have been available.

Students are also turning to evening classes instead of traditional university courses in a bid to make themselves more employable. Birkbeck College has reported a 43 per cent increase in applications for its evening degree courses.
