Athletics greats join our bid to get London running for Sport Relief

10 April 2012

Athletics legends Denise Lewis and Colin Jackson are the latest stars to back the Evening Standard's Get London Running campaign.

The pair, both ambassadors for London 2012, are encouraging readers to sign up to run the London Mile to help raise money for deprived communities.

Since the Standard's Dispossessed Fund joined forces with Sport Relief, more than 5,000 people have entered the race.

Lewis, who won heptathlon gold at the Sydney Games in 2000, said: "It's just a bit of fun but the money raised will make all the difference; 2012 is going to be such an exciting year for London and what better way to start it than with this?

"It doesn't matter if it takes you five minutes or 50 minutes because the money you raise will help fantastic projects in the capital, across the UK and in the world's poorest countries. Just £5 will pay for a hot meal at a safe house for a mother and child who have fled domestic abuse."

About 30,000 Londoners are expected to sign up for the Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile on Sunday, March 25. The route runs along the Mall and entrants can choose one, three, and six-mile events.

Jackson, former world record holder, world champion and Olympic silver medallist in the 110m hurdles, said: "Londoners, get up, start stretching and flexing those muscles and enter the Mile in London."
