A woman died in the street after a suspected hit-and-run in east London.

Police were called after a woman, thought to be in her 30s, was found bleeding to death in Shadwell at around 9pm on Thursday.

The London Ambulance Service also attended but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene in Cannon Street Road.

A spokesman for the Met said officers believe they know the victim's identity, but added that her next of kin have yet to be informed.

He said: "Police were called by London Ambulance Service at around 21:05hrs on Thursday, 10 December to an injured female on the floor and bleeding in Cannon Street Road, near the junction with The Highway, E1.

"Officers attended and the woman, believed aged in her 30s, and suffering a serious head injury was pronounced dead at scene.

"At this early stage it is believed the woman sustained her injuries as a result of a fail-to-stop collision."

An investigation into what happened is now underway.

Police cars and other emergency vehicles were on the scene late on Thursday as roads in the area were closed after the incident.

Any witnesses or anyone with any information can call police via 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via crimestoppers-uk.org.
