A supergrass who helped jail the killer of an unarmed community police officer in south London is suing Scotland Yard, claiming he was not paid his full reward.
Gary Nelson, 44, described at the time as the most dangerous man in London, was jailed for life for the 1993 shootings of Pc Patrick Dunne and William Danso.
He was brought to court in 2006 partly on the evidence of a serving prisoner who saw a reconstruction on Crimewatch and claimed Nelson had told him: “I shot that copper, the one on the bike.”
The witness, known as AB, says he was promised £100,000 offered by police in the Crimewatch appeal, but has only received £20,000 after being told “there was no money left in the pot”.
The informant told how Nelson, suspected of a string of other murders, made the confession while he was serving time for another offence at Wormwood Scrubs jail.
Legal papers lodged with Leeds county court show the witness is suing the Metropolitan Police for £80,000 plus interest, according to the Daily Mirror.
Jamaican-born gangster Nelson shot Ghanaian-born Danso, 31, a father of four, in his flat in Clapham. Hearing gunfire, Pc Dunne, 44, who was attending a minor domestic dispute, went into the street and was shot.
A Met spokesman said today that it had received the claim in May this year and it had not been settled. “Proceedings are ongoing so we cannot comment,” he said.
